Carbon Consumption

• 1 hectare of savannah forest absorbs 3.4 tonnes of carbon per year (in the form of CO2)

• 1 hectare of temperate forest absorbs 3.9 tonnes of carbon per year (in the form of CO2)

• Australia’s land based eco systems absorb 150 million tonnes of carbon per year (source: University of WA website)

• 150 million tonnes of carbon is equivalent to 540 million tonnes of CO2 per year (tonnes of carbon absorbed can be converted to actual tonnes of CO2 absorbed by multiplying by 3.6)

Carbon Emissions

• Australia’s CO2 emissions for 2022 resulting from human activity were 338.3 million tonnes of CO2 produced (source: OurWorldata.Org)

Conclusion

The land mass of Australia consumes 1.6times more CO2 than it produces (due to human activity).
