Yes starting slowly/small is so important. Thinking results in percentages not amounts. And the setting of a percentage buy limit per stock - for me I got to a point with brv.asx where I could not buy anymore because of portfolio risk management.
Concentrated investors also tend to sit on a fair amount of cash for optionality, which reduces overall exposure. Which implies that they have no debt.
