While many had tipped Capricorn Metals to take out the Digger Award for the seamless start-up of its Karlawinda gold mine, it was the surprise winner of the Dealer Award for the $39.6 million acquisition of the Mt Gibson gold project.

Some had ruled out Capricorn all together, given Diggers owner Myles Ertzen sits on its board.

Capricorn executive chairman Mark Clark said he'd spent a year working on the deal and was like a "dog with a bone".

"It doesn't need to be a multibillion dollar transaction to be successful," he said.

"It shows you can look for value off the grid."
