for instance they might say to their broker they get the stock delivered to them on May 1 2024
however they wish to sell now at these prices

so the broker will borrow or short the stock for them, and get a guarantee in writing that on May1 20204, they will return the borrowed / shorted stock to the broker

and that's assuming they are sellers ?

maybe they whack it in a margin loan and can liberate some funds for themselves at competitive interest rate ?
maybe they buy more
maybe they sit tight

maybe some insto approaches/ begs them to take that stock off their hands ?
