I'm not an expert on payments at all and very interested in others comments but this seems like very exciting news for Smartpay. The banking oligopoly in NZ has relied on the fact that outsiders cannot access the debit system, but Smartpay has found a simple work around to attack all credit payments. It is going to be carnage for the banks!
Debit Card shares of electronic transactions in NZ is down from 58% in 2011 to only 35% in 2022 and the trend is very clear:

Smartpay has targeted small business in Australia. I wonder if they may be able to have a crack at the very lucrative large merchants in NZ.
