A more professional and informative communication by far. Unless the challengers are going to pull an ace from their sleeve, it might be best to withdraw gracefully with a "we'll be watching" postscript. I've yet to hear anything from them.
No doubt the incumbents have been given the giddy up from this. Irrespective of what capabilities the newcomers have, it seems unlikely they can hit the ground running fast enough to not only meet, but exceed the status quo by enough to justify the disruption caused.
