Australia has swung behind the US with a pledge of extra military aid for Ukraine, offering a fresh package worth $100 million.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles travelled to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Saturday to meet Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to unveil the new support.

Australia’s contribution comes just days after US Congress ended months of wrangling to agree to a new package of military assistance for Ukraine, just as it seemed Russia was gaining the upper hand on the battlefield

The Albanese government’s latest pledge takes Canberra’s military aid to Ukraine in the two years since Russia’s February 2022 invasion to $880 million. Total Australian assistance, including humanitarian support, now tops $1 billion.
