govts have always subsidised new industry. how do you think coal power stations got started. govts built them. and this is not just Aus but most developed countries. and this is why undeveloped countries can't get businesses to supply them with electricity.
to develop a society a govt needs money. to get money they have to tax the people if they don't own profitable utilities. to tax the people they need to create jobs that pay. to create jobs they need money. this is why we give to foreign aid.
and yep. GDP would have had us in the red several times during the last decade before the Lab govt. its a big job to push GDP when business is going Ai automated. I guess they'll have to create some productive jobs hey.
