You assume correlation equals cause. The spill will undoubtedly have had some effect, but nobody is in a position to say how significant. I was a bit on the fence, but the bottom line is that a legal and democratic process was followed.
We don't have to like the rules, but complaining about what might have been seems less than pointless now.
