Some 30 years ago most Australian jurisdictions summarily abandoned the use of mental health facilities (asylums) to detain people with certain dangerous psychiatric ailments ostensibly on the basis that it had been determined that asylums were awful places and that these people could be better treated in society. This assertion was and remains a lie and was contrary to the advice of almost any professional who actually treated such people. But Psychiatrists were seen as having a vested commercial interest in keeping lots of people locked up and the real reason for closing down asylums (rather than updating them and ensuring they were run appropriately) was always cost. But the cost of keeping these people in the community is also very high and for decades now we have been living cheek by jowel with people who would have been under lock and key 30 years ago. They only get locked up these days AFTER they kill someone and then in a prison not somewhere where they will get any treatment. Mental institutions were built for a reason and whilst medication has transformed lives of many people who suffer from mental illness, there are some who can never be allowed in the community.This generation thinks they know better than the people of previous centuries and that they are the 'the enlightened generation'.
