The NSW East Coast has ample supply of Gas in the form of CSG and if it hadn't been for the Greenies (supported by a few well-known media numptys) spooking the Carr state government at the time (mid-90s), Sydney and surrounds would now have plenty of Gas and could have converted coal-fired Power Stns to gas in an orderly fashion. I have no doubt that this would have resulted in lower power prices than what you see today. Long term energy security and politics do not mix well, and now we are seeing it yet again with Bowen and renewables. At least at the time, the QLD government had the good sense to support CSG even when it was unpopular with the Greenies - its such a pity the current QLD government has also drunk the zero-carbon cool-aid though
