The majority of research that goes into evaluating the effect of diet on cancer has been done as prevention over cure. Some of the difficulties associated with evaluating diets such as ketogenic dieting as a potential agent against cancer include cell lines, tissues, and animal models don't develop cancer in the same way, it's difficult to evaluate intake and quantify certain food groups from a varied diet, few well-established biomarkers for cancer progression, and whether serum concentrations are a sufficient surrogate for tissue exposure.

One of the concerns that I have for Ketogenic dieting is the long-term implications. Ketogenic dieting is a restrictive diet by design and in doing so decreases the intake of micronutrients and anti-inflammatory agents commonly found in carbohydrate containing foods. The long-term implications for ketogenic dieting are not yet known, but I suspect a well thoughtout supplement regime could make up for differences.

I am of the opinion that diet and exercise should be screened for when gathering information from patients about to embark on drug-related cancer trials. I think that the synergistic effect of good diet and exercise habits can influence a persons outcomes greatly. I guess we'll see whether this makes the cut for some of RAC's trials.
