It depends on what you consider Russia's objectives are:
-If you think that Russia wants all of the Ukraine as a state in the Russian Federation
then I agree with you that so far Russia has failed to achieve that objective.
-But if you think that Russia's objective is to prevent the Ukraine from joining NATO
then so far Russia has won (as it has in Georgia and Moldova ....neither have been
acceptable as NATO members because of disputed borders instigated by Russia)
IMO both Russia and the Ukraine are looking for more than they would settle for
(like a Trade Union 'log of claims, where a lot more is asked for so that compromise
can be made. ) In this case the problem is to know where the red lines are on both sides
and IMO that will only be discovered when there's a ceasefire/negotions.
Obviously both sides agreed previously to Minsk2 and perhaps that's where both sides will have
to revisit?
