If you look at Russia's relationship with EU from 2000 to 2008 it was going from strength to strength, 2007 was the high point under Putin's leadership. Russia provided cheap energy, food and materials prompting some observers to consider EU economy a technologically advanced near peer to the USA. Russia and EU had a visa facilitation agreement - multiple entry visas to facilitate business. what happened in 2008 - USA against the wishes of Germany and France announced Ukraine and Georgia would become part of NATO. It was the chessboard move hatched by Cheney and continued by his apprentice Nuland. US knew Putin and the Russians would feel angry about this and red-lines were drawn by Russia. Thats why USA pushed it. Putin was not opposed to Ukraine becoming part of EU if they wanted to but he thought he could offer a better deal which didnt include any need to end trade relationships with EU. He was totally opposed to Ukraine becoming part of NATO and warned it would lead to war. US facilitated and supported the successful coup in 2014 and the rest is just a story of a fading US empire over-reach and incompetent bungling and hubris...... a slow motion disaster, the closing chapter to a great system of Western democracy failing due to various progressive changes and losing sight of the individual freedom and quality education that made it a success in the first place.

The 2014 coup was not facilitated by US. It was facilitated in Lvov, West Ukraine which initially even declared independence briefly from Kyiv. Hot tempered west Ukrainians would not tolerate a three months waiting time till next election. They wanted it right now.
