You're right - MC is the market's perception of the value of a business - pure and simple - share price multiplied by number of shares issued equals market capitalisation.
Earnings means the net profit available to the company after all expenses inc. taxes are paid. Straight out of the Profit & Loss then posted to the Balance Sheet.
