    130. Dulzaina

The Dulzaina (Spanish: [dulˈθajna]) or dolçaina (Catalan pronunciation: [dolˈsajna]/[dulˈsajnə]) is a traditional woodwind instrument that is commonly found in Spain, particularly in the regions of Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, and Madrid. It is a double-reed instrument that belongs to the oboe family.
The Dulzaina has a cylindrical wooden body with eight finger holes on the front and one thumb hole on the back. It typically has a range of about two octaves and produces a bright and piercing sound. The reeds, which are responsible for producing the sound, are made from cane and are attached to a metal staple.
Traditionally, the Dulzaina was played in pairs, with one instrument playing the melody while the other provided a harmonic accompaniment. This duo is known as "Dulzainero" or "Dulzainera" in Spanish. The instrument's sound is often associated with folk music, regional festivals, and traditional dances, such as jotas and seguidillas.
Over the years, the Dulzaina has undergone some modifications and improvements. Modern versions of the instrument may feature additional keys to extend the range and improve the instrument's playability. However, the basic structure and sound of the Dulzaina have remained relatively unchanged.
The Dulzaina holds significant cultural importance in the regions where it is played. It is considered a symbol of traditional Spanish music and is frequently used in folkloric ensembles and bands. The instrument has also found its place in contemporary music, where it is often incorporated into fusion genres and experimental compositions, expanding its versatility beyond traditional contexts.
