it’s severe and stubborn conservativism
I’ve been in the middle of them where they rave about how the French are socialists and bad, but in the next breath tell you about how they just got wondrous treatment in the French medical system and how they love the France waterway system and it’s so so so much all cheaper than the UK and how you can buy such beautiful houses in France at a fraction of the price in the UK
If one wants to see why Britain is buggered - go and buy some engineering bits and go to a fresh food market
see how you go with weights and measures
or try dealing with the foreign office or Borderforce.
Britain has some things which it does really well, but it’s just so so so slow to change and adapt
they stubbornly resist change - and you cannot do that in a fast changing society and survive

it had to be- British character disallows fast adaptation
