BHP offers $39 billion for Anglo American in mining shake-up | Reuters



Everyone is talking about this potential merger. Now what does 'BHP want with Anglo?
1. BHP made it clear they are not interested in Anglo's South African assets due to geopolitcal risk.
2. Some say that they are into it for Anglo's copper mines in South America i.e. copper is set to play an important role in the low carbon era, no need for new mining permits, etc.
3. On top of copper, I think they are in it for the high grade Minas-Rio iron ore mine in Brazil which is producing 26.5 million tonnes of DR GRADE feed per annum. That mine has 5.3 billion tonnes of high grade iron.

Whats more is that Anglo American has also partnered with H2 Green steel to produce low carbon steel using EAF/DRI technology (more here: Anglo American partners with H2 Green Steel to advance low carbon steelmaking | Anglo American). This happened in April 2023.

Coincidence? I think not.

BHP is sending a clear signal that they are willing to spend 39 billion to secure a few key low carbon assets. Surely if you're willing to spend 39 billion to take over some mine in Brazil, surely they've noticed our 6 billion tons++ and plus, we're neighbours.
