It appears we did nearly blink out.
Our entire human DNA is less diverse than an average troupe of wild chimps.

There are a number of speculations that one might draw from this and they depend on your prejudices and assumptions to some degree.

In a random system without any underlying purpose and will, this means nothing, it's just what happened to the human animal, no biggie.

In a system Created by God, it didn't happen. iI you're a Creationist, God made us perfect and free of death, then Eve became a victim of entrapment set-up by the two most powerful supernatural beings, God and Satin and they blamed her and then Adam for being henpecked into letting Eve rule his life. This stitched-up sin then caused their DNA to change and death became written into our DNA, we subsequently became less than perfect and this is why humans now die. Not sure why animals die? Also the lack of diversity in our DNA is because we are all the grandchildren of Adam and Eve, which is kind of interesting because there would have been a pairing that did produce our dominant gene-pool.

Or you could postulate that this throttling down of our DNA was so that we would have no choice but to see ourselves as a single family.

Or some form of God does not exist and we just got lucky not to have become extinct.

What we can't say is that our diminished DNA diversity means anything one way or the other.
