As far as I know, SWF does not hold shares. That's not their business. See their audited financial reports for more details. So you're really going into conspiracy territory.

The obvious answer is that it was a technical glitch.

Historically, it has been any time that OpenMarkets has downtime, or even upstream providers of OM.

SWF's business is mainly connected by API to their providers, and using cloud resources for servers etc. So generally downtime is when their providers have issues. Some issues cannot be palmed off though, eg. app released with bugs.


I think some perspective comparing it to other brokers is warranted too. To expect 0% downtime is to expect them to be perfect. If EVERY broker has had some downtime in the past 3 years, then is 20 minutes of downtime unreasonable?

Yes, it's annoying, but is it unreasonable?

During COVID for comparison, SWF has some of the least downtime of NABTrade, Superhero, Stake, Selfwealth (Commsec I forget, and they're the only other big name in the list at the time).

Selfwealth in most cases was around 20 minutes, but I remember around 1-2 times where it was a couple of hours.

By comparison, Stake and NABTrade had days of downtime.

SWF's biggest issue was not downtime, but 1+ month delay to approve sign-ups during COVID/GME, due to staff shortages (now possibly overstaffed).
