call to spend 6 billion on murray darling

The federal Opposition says the Government needs to release $6 billion of infrastructure funding to help the Murray-Darling Basin.

Opposition climate change and water spokesman Greg Hunt has just finished a six-day, 3,000-kilometre trip of the basin.

He says farmers all along the river system say they could save water if they had better infrastructure.

"There are perhaps 600 billion litres of savings which can be made, but Senator Wong is sitting on the infrastructure funding," he said.

"That funding needs to be unfrozen for helping with piping, lining of channels, lining of dams."
