in John 11:25 Jesus is responding to Martha who said "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day"

Martha must have been a Jew (given she knew about resurrection and the last day). What was this "last day" she was referring to? And why were the dead not coming out of their tombs on that particular Last Day/Day of Resurrection?
