Just a tiny further snippet on all this : We were one of the very few who had built their own home in Darwin. To have it come down around your ears with two small children to protect was quite another level of fear. It wasn't just another government house, it was our life savings n hard work - destroyed.
We rebuilt the place afterwards, to the first post cyclone code, got one one the first caravans into Darwin & the wife & boys were back home by May.
Darwin is a wonderful place, especially when you're young - we're looking forward to going back for the 50th.
